Effervescent experienced television host Nerina De Jager has travelled the world, captivating audiences everywhere she goes. Now, the broadcasting beauty has her sights set on Hollywood, having received an offer from a major television network. The South African born talent is recognized in the industry for her highly personable style of hosting, and is planning on bringing this experience to her new ventures in Los Angeles. (Interview: Dennis Rowehl)
Autona: Nerina, you're from South Africa. Will you show up to the Soccer World Championship or have you turned into a „real“ North-American?
Nerina: I’m dying to go, but unfortunately time restrictions will not allow me to sneak away to my home country in June. I think South Africa is going to do a fabulous job hosting that – and I’ll be cheering on Bafana Bafana from across the Atlantic for sure! I love North America and have really embraced the life over here, but a big part of me will always be firmly grounded in Africa. That’s where my roots are.
Autona: You started your TV career with moderating TV shows etc. and you interviewed celebrities in a show about fashion, music and art based on West Coast lifestyle trends from LA to Vancouver but you also got the lead role in the feature film “The Greenwich Village Massacre”. What will you prefer in the future or will you concentrate on both?
Nerina: Even though I’m focusing on TV hosting for the moment, I would love to get back into acting. My mom also pursued acting, so I guess it’s in my blood and I’ll always have a passion for it! However, I’m hoping to have my own TV show in the near future, and planning that will take up a lot of my time. But that’s what I love about the world of entertainment. It’s such an unpredictable journey, you never know what’s going to happen next!
Autona: How important is fashion for you?
Nerina: I’m kind of laid back when it comes to dressing, but love fashion all the same. Design is a form of art that inspire me a lot. So I might not always look like I’ve stepped off the set of Sex and the City, but I love beautiful clothes all the same. I do have a tremendous soft spot for scarves, hats and ties, those are the items that I most enjoy buying.
Autona: So you like shopping, right?
Nerina: On Sunday mornings when everyone is still sleeping off their Saturday nights. Busy shops freak me out! My friends say my shopping is like a hit and run. So it’s not exactly my favorite pastime, I like spending time being creative in a different way - writing music, working on my book, planning my show etc.
Autona: Are there any further offers for movies?
Nerina: Not at the moment, but I will pursue that avenue when I get to LA.
Autona: What's a better place to live? Los Angeles or Vancouver?
Nerina: There are elements of both that I enjoy, but I’m going to have to say Los Angeles – I love the fast pace, and there is a lot of creative energy flying around. The first time I went there was for the Emmy’s in 2009, and I fell in love instantly – it really is the holy grail when it comes to film and TV. And the weather is very similar to what I’m used to in Africa. Vancouver has been an amazing city to live in though and a really important part of my personal journey. I will always be very fond of it.
